An Announcement from PBA President, Peter Gallagher

It is with true sadness that I announce to you the passing of a dedicated member of our federation, Dan Wise, CGP, CGB. Dan was an advocate, not just for our association, but for affordable housing and environmental issues affecting all builders within our industry. As a member of the Builders Association of Central PA for over 30 years, Dan served numerous terms on the local board of directors and as a past president. He was also a chair of the Education and Legislative committee, as well as the lead advisor for the State College Area High School Building Construction Technology program.

For those of us who were honored enough to work with him on the state level, we depended on Dan for his expertise as a Certified Green Builder and for his experience with construction codes. A Life Director of the board, his commitment to PBA also included several leadership terms as a regional legislative officer and regional vice president. He served as chair of the Workforce Training & Education committee, the PA Housing Finance committee, the UCC task force and the Small Contractors task force. In 1994, he was the PBA Hammers and Gavels award winner for his support on legislative issues.

In 2014, Dan was one of 30 individuals nationwide announced as a Home Innovation NGBS (National Green Building Standard) Green Partner of Excellence. Incorporating this standard into all of his projects, notable accomplishments included the first NGBS Gold-certified remodel in the state of Pennsylvania and the first NGBS Gold-certified Lindal Cedar Home in the country.

Other national achievements were his position as chair of the NAHB Green Building Codes and Standards subcommittee, a member of the 2015 International Code Council Green Building Code Development committee, and previous recognition as the 2013 NAHB National Green Builder Advocate of the Year.

Funeral arrangements have been announced as follows:

Koch's Funeral Home in State College

    Friday March 13, 2015

First visitation from 11 am to 2 pm

Second visitation 5 pm to 7:30 pm

    Service at 7:30 pm

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Dan Wise Memorial Fund at the First National Bank in Boalsburg. This fund will be used in the upcoming months to establish the Dan Wise Memorial Scholarship for a student in the Building Construction Technology Program at State College Area High School, a program Dan was very passionate about.

On behalf of the leadership and members of PBA, our deepest condolences to the Wise family.

    Sincerely,

    Peter Gallagher

    2015 PBA President

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Four Pennsylvania Builders Association’s (PBA) Endorsed Trade Programs won prestigious awards in multiple categories in the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Residential Construction Management Competition (RCMC). This competition was held at the 2015 NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas last week.

The NAHB Student Chapter and PBA Endorsed Trade Program at Williamsport Area High School won first place in the High School/Secondary category. The chapter at York County School of Technology placed second in this category, with Cumberland Perry AVTS winning third. The Penn College of Technology two-year team took fourth place, and the four-year team took 12th place in their respective divisions.

More than 75,000 builders, remodelers, students, faculty members and suppliers packed the aisles at the 2015 International Builders’ Show, Design & Construction Week. Fifty-four teams representing universities, community colleges, high schools and career technical schools across the U.S. participated in the annual competition, according to NAHB.

“We are very proud of our award-winning Endorsed Trade Programs,” says Peter Gallagher, 2015 PBA President. “Particularly with how well they have represented the state of Pennsylvania in this competition. These students work incredibly hard and are very knowledgable in their fields. They certainly are the future of our workforce.”

During the competition, students solve real-life construction management problems and present their solutions to a judging panel of residential construction industry experts.

“Congratulations to the Pennsylvania NAHB Student Chapters,” said Jerry Howard, CEO of NAHB. “They and their competitors showed a great deal of talent along with a depth of understanding of building industry management, from land development to marketing to scheduling to estimating.” Howard acted as Master of Ceremonies during the Student Awards Ceremony at the Show.

“Students will remember the competition for the rest of their lives,” said Bill Faulk, chairman of the High School Competition Committee for the NAHB Student Chapters Advisory Board. “The judges were impressed with this year’s group, and we expect once again that the participants will be at the top of the heap when it comes to job offers.”
